SD-WAN (Software-Defined Wide Area Network) is a networking architecture that uses software to control how traffic is routed across multiple WAN connections, including broadband, LTE, and MPLS. Rather than using a fixed hardware-defined path for all traffic, SD-WAN applies policies that direct each application to the best available connection based on real-time performance conditions. The result is better application performance, lower costs, and built-in resilience without dependence on expensive dedicated circuits.

MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) is a dedicated private circuit with guaranteed performance but high cost and long provisioning lead times. SD-WAN uses commodity internet connections (broadband, LTE) with software intelligence to deliver comparable or better performance at significantly lower cost. Most SD-WAN deployments replace primary MPLS circuits with dual broadband connections, using SD-WAN policies to manage failover, application prioritisation, and link bonding. Achieving MPLS-level reliability without MPLS costs.

A VoIP call is routed differently from a file backup: the call takes the lowest-latency path while the backup uses whatever capacity is available.
