Client Insights and AIOps in Aruba Central: Turning Telemetry Into Action

Aruba Central collects a great deal of telemetry. The value is not the data, it is whether it shortens the path from a user complaint to a correct fix. Here is how Client Insights and AIOps do that in practice.

Telemetry is not the point. action is.

Every modern network platform collects telemetry, and it is easy to mistake the volume of data for value. The measure that matters is different: does the platform shorten the distance between a user saying "the WiFi is slow" and an operator knowing precisely why and what to do. On that measure, the Client Insights and AIOps capabilities in HPE Aruba Networking Central are a real step up from dashboard-and-infer troubleshooting, provided you know what they do and where their limits are.

This is a practitioner's view of how to turn those features into faster, more accurate operations.

What Client Insights does

Client Insights profiles the devices on your network using native telemetry from the access points, switches, and gateways themselves. Two aspects make it useful:

  • It is agentless. There is nothing to install on endpoints. The infrastructure already sees the traffic and behaviour, and Client Insights uses that native telemetry rather than depending on an agent that may not be present on every device.
  • It uses machine-learning classification. Rather than relying only on static fingerprints, it applies ML-based models to identify and profile a wide range of clients, including the growing population of IoT and unmanaged devices that classic profiling struggles with.

The practical payoff is visibility: an accurate, continuously updated picture of what is actually on the network. That visibility is the foundation for both troubleshooting and policy, because you cannot secure or prioritise devices you cannot identify.

Why agentless matters

The devices you most need to see cannot run an agent

The endpoints that create the most uncertainty (IoT sensors, cameras, medical and industrial devices, personal devices) are exactly the ones that will never run a management agent. Agentless, telemetry-based profiling is the only approach that sees them, which is why it matters more as networks fill with unmanaged devices.

What AIOps adds

Where Client Insights answers "what is on the network", AIOps addresses "what is wrong and why". Central applies both traditional and generative AI to the telemetry to surface anomalies, generate actionable insights, and increasingly suggest or drive remediation. Rather than presenting an operator with raw graphs to interpret, it aims to point at the likely problem: a struggling access point, an RF issue, a roaming problem, a client failing at a particular stage of connection.

The more recent agentic direction, surfaced through the GreenLake copilot, extends this toward reasoning across signals and proposing actions. For an operator, the value is a shorter triage path: instead of manually correlating client, RF, and infrastructure data, you start from a diagnosis and verify it, which is faster and less error-prone.

A telemetry-led troubleshooting flow

In practice, a fault investigation using these tools tends to follow a cleaner path than the old dashboard hunt:

  • Start from the insight, not the graph. Let the platform surface the anomaly and its likely cause, and use that as the working hypothesis.
  • Confirm with client-level detail. Drill into the affected client's connection journey (association, authentication, DHCP, roaming) to verify where it is actually failing.
  • Separate client from infrastructure. The telemetry helps distinguish a problem with one device from a problem with the access point, the RF environment, or an upstream dependency.
  • Act, then verify. Apply the fix and use the same telemetry to confirm the issue is resolved rather than assuming it.

The result is fewer "no fault found" tickets and less time spent proving whether a problem is the network or something upstream of it.

Where judgement still matters

These tools are powerful, but two honest caveats keep them useful. First, their output is only as good as the deployment feeding them: a poor RF design or inconsistent configuration produces noisy telemetry and less reliable insight, so the fundamentals still have to be right. Second, AI-surfaced diagnoses are hypotheses, not verdicts. The operator's job shifts from finding the problem unaided to validating a suggested cause, which is faster but still requires the experience to know when the suggestion is wrong. The tooling raises the floor. it does not remove the need for skill.

The security angle

Accurate, agentless client identification is not only an operations benefit. it is a security one, and the two reinforce each other. Knowing precisely what is on the network is the prerequisite for segmenting it, and the same Client Insights profiling feeds directly into network access control and dynamic segmentation decisions. Identifying an unmanaged device correctly is what lets you place it in the right segment with the right policy, rather than trusting it by default. In that sense, visibility is where good networking and good security meet.

If you run Aruba Central but treat it mainly as a configuration console, you are likely leaving the Client Insights and AIOps value on the table. A useful starting point is a review of how you currently troubleshoot and what your telemetry could be telling you: whether the deployment is clean enough for the insights to be trusted, and how to fold them into your operational process. That turns features you own into faster operations.
